Remote PC access software is a great tool that can be used in many different ways. The ability to access any computer from remote locations has many uses for both the family user as well as for big businesses. Emote access allows you to do so much more than just "see" the other computer. It allows you to access the files, use the software and even use the networks that its connected to.
While you can see just how many benefits this can have, it also sounds the alarm bells. If its not properly configured and policed it can cause some serious security issues. Its recommended that you follow these 3 basic tips to help keep you and your data safe when using remote access software.
1. Passwords
Always keep your passwords private. If someone has your passwords they can log in and do whatever they want without leaving a footprint. Always follow the recommended password guidelines give by the software provider. Passwords should always be at least 8 characters long with letters, numbers, capital letters and should not spell recognized words.
2. Sensitive Data
As a rule of thumb I would not store sensitive data on any computers that can be accessed remotely - especially if you have multiple users that can access multiple machines. For home use, never store any of your sensitive data in obvious locations and if you are going to use remote access software you should always password protect those sensitive folders as an additional measure of security.
3. User Control
Its important that larger organizations assign an IT manager to control the access. You should implement certain rules as to who is allowed which access and if you allow server access then you need to make sure that your security system can handle it.
